The Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) is a national probability sample of hospitals in the U.S. and its territories. Approximately 100 NEISS-participating hospitals collect patient information for every emergency visit involving an injury associated with consumer products. From this sample, the total number of product-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms nationwide can be estimated. The sampling algorithm was designed for common consumer products and may not be as accurate for products with non-random distribution, such as amusement rides.

CPSC Estimates for Amusement Ride-Related Injuries

The following injury estimates were calculated using data and formulas provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Prior to 2006, Commission staff performed an extended analysis of the amusement ride-related injury data, attempting to separate records related to amusement park rides from traveling carnival rides, mechanical rides from inflatable rides, and unattended coin-operated rides from operator-attended rides. This is an imprecise and time-intensive exercise, as hospital records appear to employ the terms "carnival ride" and "amusement park ride" interchangeably (e.g., some records reported an injury occurred on a"carnival ride at an amusement park", some cited the location as an "amusement park ride at a carnival").

  • Table data for amusement ride-related injuries in years 1997-2004 was taken from page 14 of the CPSC's 2005 report.
  • ¹ In 2006, the Commission elected to discontinue the special analysis due to budget concerns. The CPSC issued a memo which explained the staff's categorization scheme and provided a formula for crude estimates based on ratios of past data. Saferparks has employed that formula for table entries beyond 2004, the last year of the last published staff analysis.
  • Estimates of injuries on public water slides and go-karts were obtained from the CPSC's NEISS Online system. Note that the go-kart category includes all go-karts: home, racing, off-road, and amusement venue concession karts.
