National Amusement Ride Safety Plan

Responsible Use Law for Everyone's Safety (RULES)

Everyone who works on or uses amusement rides should be required to abide by the simple common sense requirements outlined for patrons in the ASTM standard for operation of amusement rides and devices (ASTM F770).

Within the current ASTM standards for amusement rides and devices, patrons are the only people required to use good judgment, stay sober, use all provided safety equipment, and follow all instructions given for safe use of the machinery. Rider Responsibility is an important piece of the safety equation, but those expectations and requirements should apply to the people operating, maintaining, and inspecting the equipment as well as the customers who use it.

Suggested language

Responsible Use Law for Everyone's Safety (RULES):

  • Exercise good judgment and act in a responsible manner while riding, viewing, or working on or around the amusement ride;
  • Obey all instructions and warnings;
  • Properly use all ride safety equipment provided;
  • Refrain from intentionally acting in a manner that could endanger any person or inflict damage on the amusement ride; and
  • Refrain from working on or using the amusement ride when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
